Lessons Learned from Suga's Struggle

Gastroenteritis, often called a stomach bug, can wreak havoc on our furry family members. It is an inflammatory condition of the gastrointestinal tract that causes discomfort, dehydration, excessive scratching, diarrhea, and a host of other unpleasant symptoms.

Difficulties with Gastroenteritis

Suga's battle with gastroenteritis was challenging to diagnose. Attempts to assist him in overcoming his battle were exhaustive; it seemed hopeless. With Suga, we tried and met countless veterinarians, adjusted his diet with different meal plans, and underwent numerous medical procedures. Finally, after two years of continued challenges, we met Dr. Michael Suhie, a brilliant veterinarian who became our family vet—we trusted no one else. After pouring over Suga's health records, he realized we had exhausted nearly every possible diagnosis; he recommended a diet free from meat and filler ingredients. Additionally, a small dose of Tylan every 24 hours was also recommended.

Veterinarians Should Be Consulted

There are many causes for gastroenteritis; according to Bales (2021), it "can be caused by many underlying issues" (para. 13). Likewise, Khuley (2021) shared, "Though common, gastroenteritis can be frustrating, scary and — depending on its cause and its effects on the individual dog — challenging to manage." Reading through these articles and knowing the procedures Suga underwent to reach better health reinforces the journey of why gastroenteritis is challenging to diagnose and should not be ignored.

Navigating the Challenges of Suga's Journey

Suga's journey with gastroenteritis imparted invaluable lessons and shed light on the importance of unwavering devotion to problem-solving. It underscored the importance of recognizing and addressing gastrointestinal issues and the critical role of a dedicated veterinarian, nutritious diet, and supportive environment in promoting good health. As he has aged, Suga has had a few episodes of gastroenteritis, although not as severe. Since moving, we have a new vet, Dr. Catherine Hennessy, who recommended a prescription food diet, Biome from Hills, which he enjoys. This proactive approach has eliminated subsequent issues in his gastrointestinal tract.

Through Suga's experience and a combination of veterinary care, dietary adjustments, and plenty of TLC, we have witnessed his gradual improvement and eventual triumph over this challenging foe.
